Small Christian Communities
Small Christian Communities (SCCs), or basic ecclesial communities as they were called in Vatican II, are fundamental to St Rose’s transition into a parish community of communities. They will help our parish continue to grow into as a vibrant, self-sustaining, community of communities who love and worship our Lord.
They are a means to develop community and fellowship through faith sharing and reading the Gospel. It is not a Bible study, but through group discussion and sharing, SCC members will find their spiritual life and understanding of scripture will be greatly enhanced. Each SCC consists of 8 to 10 people. Gatherings are rotated through member’s homes at times and frequencies determined by each SCC’s members (typically weekly or biweekly for 60 and 90 minutes).
Interested in joining a SCC? All parishioners are welcome! Call the office and we’ll help you find a SCC in your neighborhood that works with your schedule. Here’s a map of our currently commissioned SCCs. More will be added as we continue to offer the Parish Retreats across all our parish communities.
Parish Retreat - Small Christian Communities Kick-off
St Rose Parish is excited to offer this Parish Retreat as a kick-off for our new Small Christian Communities (SCC). We have chosen to use an excellent program called The Choice Wine as the basis for the retreat. While The Choice Wine program’s focus is on married couples, the content of most sessions is applicable to all Catholics looking to grow in their knowledge and love of God. We believe that all parishioners, married or single, will find the program to be engaging and fulfilling. Come with an open heart and let the Spirit move you!
The retreat is being offered multiple times over the next several months as it is rolled out across the parish. Click here for the schedule and times and a map of our SCC communities. All registered parishioners will be receiving a personal phone call inviting you to attend. You can also sign up by contacting the Parish office.

Parish Retreat & Small Christian Communities FAQs
Q: What is this Parish Retreat?
A: It is an exciting retreat held over the course of two weekends. We are using “The Choice Wine” program as the basis for most of the retreat. It is a unique program in that it integrates the latest findings from modern science with the teachings of our faith. The Parish retreat will also provide an introduction on how to participate in a Small Christian Community (SCC) and an opportunity for you to join an SCC.
Q: What happens if I attend the first part of the retreat and something comes up and I cannot finish?
A: There are several retreats scheduled. Anyone who cannot attend the retreat they have been invited to attend, or cannot finish it, can attend another retreat.
Q: What does attending the retreat cost?
A: Attendance is free. Including all of the materials that are provided (most of which have been funded by generous donations from Catholics who have attended a previous program). At the end of the retreat participants will be asked to consider a donation to assist future participants. The decision to do so is a personal one.
Q: Does this retreat focus on married couples? I’m not married; should I attend?
A: The Choice Wine program was originally designed to assist married couples in the development of a Superabundant Marriage as understood by the Church. However, the content of the sessions can be applied by all Catholics looking to grow in their love and knowledge of God. It will provide a strong spiritual foundation that will truly prepare all participants for the next step in our journey which is the creation of our Small Christian Communities.
Q: What are Small Christian Communities?
A: SCCs are a means to develop community through faith sharing and reading the Gospel. It is not a Bible study; but through group discussion and sharing attendees will find their understanding of scripture will be greatly enhanced as well as their overall spiritual life. Each SCC will consist of approximately 8 to 10 people with one person acting as the facilitator. Meetings will be held once per week in participant’s homes and will normally last between 60 and 90 minutes.
Q: I have heard other churches such as CCV do something like small community meetings but does the Catholic Church, especially in the United States, support them?
A: Oh yes! Pope John Paul II said this in his Apostolic Exhortation in 1999: “The Church as Family cannot reach all her possibilities as Church unless she is divided into communities small enough to foster close human relationships.”
Q: How do I join an SCC?
A: The Parish retreat will provide an introduction on how to participate in an SCC and an opportunity for you to join an SCC. The parish has been divided into eight geographical communities. Each interested person will be assigned to an SCC as close to their home as possible.
Q: Do I have to attend the Parish Retreat before joining an SCC?
A: The Parish retreat will allow you to meet parishioners in your neighborhoods and SCCs and it will provide an introduction on how to participate in an SCC, but attendance at the retreat is not required. Contact Bryan (Discipleship Coordinator) in the office at 623-465-9740 x101 or firstname.lastname@example.org to find the SCC closest to you.
Q: What if I join a SCC and decide that I really don’t fit in or can’t meet on their schedule. Is it possible to be assigned to another meeting?
A: Yes. It is very important that all members of a SCC are compatible and are able to bond with everyone. While we expect these situations to be few, our parish’s new Discipleship Coordinator will be able to assist.
Q: What if I have other questions?
A: Contact Bryan (Discipleship Coordinator) in the office at 623-465-9740 x101 or email@example.com.
