Video GalleryFarewell from Fr. Don
from Fr. Don Bruggeman on May 5, 2013
January 18th, I arrived in Anthem to begin my agreed upon task as Interim Pastor. I had accepted such requests in Iowa before and enjoyed those experiences. My heart was willing to serve and I hoped my body would cooperate. The body 'slows down a gear or two' as we age. I find it more difficult seeing, hearing, remembering, walking, etc. I accept these inconveniences and rejoice that I am pain free.
God is so good to me. Fr. Dick Kuhn from Iowa surprised me on the day I arrived with a call asking if I had a guest room he could use and if he could stay with me for a while. So I had a "live-in" priest who wanted to help with Masses and Confessions. I also had Fr. Godley and two deacons, a professional staff and countless volunteers to assist me in my pastoral role.
Each day I met more people, learned more about Good Shepherd and St. Rose, and gradually settled into my comfort zone. Everyone loves the Good Shepherd Mission parish with its rich history and St. Rose has quickly developed a strong and enthusiastic community under the guidance of Fr. Mark Harrington. We have gained the best from multiple parish backgrounds.
I know that investment of one's self in a parish comes to a sudden halt as the time arrives for moving on. That time has arrived. My family and friends call me home but a piece of my heart will always carry precious memories of the good times I spent with you.
You have touched my life and I know hope in one way or another, I have touched yours. Though the time was brief, the impact you made on me was deep. I enjoy the excitement in a church encountering growing pains. Through that pain and struggle comes the birth of new life. What is important how our hearts grow in appreciation of the gift that we find in working together and loving the Lord in his Community of Faith.
I am happy to have been invited to spend some time with you in the Lord's Harvest. I am also excited for you as young Fr. John Muir "catches" the Spirit that inspires and engulfs this young Church and leads it forward.
You will always be in my prayers.
Fr. Don B.
